Super Macro Mode on Sanyo Xacti HD1010

September 23rd, 2008 Faris

What’s going on everybody!

Unfortunately, the HD is not working here. For best view with HD on, please go HERE or HERE. Also, if you cannot play the video straight away, pause first and let the loading finish to let the video runs smoothly.

Just got my new baby, Sanyo Xacti HD1010 last Friday. I’m so happy and excited! Now I just realize how super cool this little gadget is. I have been experimenting and learning how to operate the camcoder. To be honest, it isn’t hard at all.

For the very first time, I decided to give it a go by switching to super macro mode and do some footage. It is definitely not the best super macro you have ever seen but to me, it’s worth it and it’s cool! Oh by the way, surprisingly WMM (Windows Movie Maker) on Vista supports .MP4 file format. It’s just that the video cannot be played on the preview while editing. Well, it plays the music (if you insert the music) but the screen goes black. I wonder why.

Original footage was filmed on full HD 1920 x 1080 @ 60 fps. Edited with Windows Movie Maker on Vista. It has been scaled down to 1440 x 1080 @ 30 fps if not mistaken. Cheers.

Strobist

June 2nd, 2008 Faris

I know most photographers and DSLR die-hard fans are common to the word “Strobist”. It becomes very popular nowadays when many of us share the information about the art or technical of lighting. Since I was introduced to photography many years ago, I always wanted to learn more and more about it whether it is about composition, exposure, lighting and many more. The only thing is, we’ve got certain limitation when we haven’t got enough equipments as well as exposure.

When I first started playing with strobes, I thought it was not that hard. Apparently, I began to confuse myself with a few things in my head. Then I thought I should read more to get myself cleared and understand how it works in the correct way. To be honest, it was not as easy as I thought. By the way, the photo above was taken in my room with single Nikon SB-800 shoot-through umbrella. I positioned the umbrella at his eye level on camera right. It is just out of the frame. Pretty straight forward setup. Not complicated at all. The shutter was set to 1/250th at f/3.5 and ISO 200.

After shooting indoor, I thought I wanted more challenge. I did some reading how people work on outdoor lighting. Again, it looked easy until I tried it and you couldn’t imagine how many wasted photos I had when I downloaded it to my PC. Nevermind, I considered that as part of learning process. Luckily, I have got a few acceptable photos to be shared and if there’s something wrong with the photos, please and please leave comments and critiques. I would love to hear from you as well. At least, I know what I have done wrong. Anyway, the shot above was taken at 1/250th at f/8 and ISO 200. SB-800 shoot-through umbrella on camera left.

Hope you enjoyed your stay and thank you very much for reading. Cheers.

iPod Classic

Yeah, just bought myself an iPod weeks ago while stopping over at Abu Dhabi airport. The price is not that cheap compared to the UK price. It’s been a while I wanted to get one. Went to Apple store a few times but didn’t really into it at that time. Then I got so tempted when I had an opportunity to listen to my SIL’s brother who also has an iPod and from that moment I made up my mind I’m going to get one soon. So, I bought it as a sourvenir for myself from Abu Dhabi hehe. I think I’m so into Apple stuff now. So, what’s next? An iMac? Macbook? Powerbook? Uh, oh…

Hey, I just bought a digicam. Now it is so possible for me to make video blog considering it has “video mode” inside. In fact, that’s the main reason I bought it. At least, I don’t have to carry my “bulky” camera everywhere I go. So now instead of taking still photo, I can capture motion pictures as well. Woohoo!

Flashgun Or Lense?

January 5th, 2008 Faris

This is the hardest decision to make. If I’m not on a tight budget, I would have bought these two items simultaneously. At the moment, I have two lenses and they are kit lense 17-85mm and 50mm f/1.8. Recently, I just realized how important to have a flashgun when I had to take pictures indoor where the light was not sufficient if I only use ordinary lense (extraordinary lense would be with bigger aperture such as f/2.8 or f/1.8 or f/1.4). So, I come to conclusion that I must have a flashgun and perhaps I should also consider the remote trigger for flash as well. That is just an additional item actually. If I can’t afford it for the time being, I shall get it later.

On the other hand, lense is also an item that should be considered as well. I have done a “survey” recently by asking a few of my friends who are photographers to give their thoughts of which one should I buy or which is the most important. Majority say I should buy lense first. The lense I’m talking about is a zoom lense 70-200mm L USM f/2.8. They say lense is an essential gear and therefore, I must have that prior to flashgun.

Well, when I think back, they might be right. Nevertheless, I always remember no matter what equipment you use, you still can produce good images if you are really good. I’m not saying you can produce good quality images by just using camera phone but the most important thing is to be creative and enable to attract people to look at our photographs.
