Last week my brother and I were experimenting our new backdrop. Initially, I thought the backdrop was small because I never imagine it’s going to be like “the real studio”. But it’s proven that I was totally wrong when the backdrop is actually huge! Well, five to six or even seven people can fit in I reckon. It is almost like a photography studio. It’s portable and easy to be carried everywhere you go (of course you need a vehicle, at least a car to keep this stuff). Unfortunately, I forgot to take “behind the scene” photo how the backdrop looks like. Maybe I’ll post it later when we have another photo session with proper lighting and stuff.
Oh yes, speaking about lighting, we also tried a few new stuff that we never done it before, like the photo above. Considering we have no lighting equipments such as brolly and softbox, we merely used a flashgun as a source to create light. I just realized Nikon SB-800 can actually be fired wirelessly without using a remote but just using a popup flash on the camera as a commander. And that picture above was created using that technique by placing the flash a bit lower with black backdrop at the back as a background. I tried using my Canon 40D’s popup flash to command SB-800 to see whether or not it’s working. It did fire but create different results. Not the kind of result we expected. Credit to my brother for the picture. Finally, I got this kind of photo which I always wanted long time ago haha. Need to learn more about lighting and stuff as I am totally zero about it.

I am waiting lots of things. The major thing is, I am waiting for my salary to come in for this month. Surely less than previous month, or I would say the “paling” little among all months so far because I am paid by hours and I was off sick for three days. I have lost probably couple of hundreds I reckon. And because of my salary hasn’t got in yet, so I can’t go shopping. I mean, not massively shopping. I’m just looking for winter coat. Something thick and warm. Will have to wait until next week apparently. I am waiting December to go travel again. This time the destination will be Al-Hambra, Spain (Woohoo! Will story more about it later). Also, if I still have some money left, would love to buy a camera bag. Not to forget, office christmas party, also will be in December. Well, certainly need to find nice and decent suit. Found one at Marks & Spencer. Not too cheap, not too expensive. Affordable enough for someone with small salary like me.
I am waiting…

I was so into portraits lately. I feel satisfy if I could take at least a photograph of a person. Although it is a kid, I don’t mind. Therefore, I have updated my photo gallery with a few kid portraits while building up my portfolio. The portfolio is for nothing actually. Just to share with the world what I have got. Who knows perhaps I might need it one day. So, at least I’ve got mine ready.
Personally, I rarely edit my photos. Not to mention I always get it perfect straight from the camera. What I’m saying here, I seldomly use major editing or should I say manipulate the image. Nevertheless, I love both whether or not it is edited. I’d love to see my photos edited sometimes. But most likely, I like them to look original. Maybe just minor editing like levelling, brightness & contrast, hue/saturation etc. Furthermore, I’m not really good in Photoshop though. But it is always cool to see other’s people works rather than mine. Is it a nature or people’s works are always better than mine? Sigh.

Oh yes I love to take portrait of people so very much. Either it is wide or close-up, both are my favourite as long as there is human in the frame. I still remember when I took a photo of my friend using DSLR for the first time, I thought it was not that hard. From that moment, I knew my favourite subject will be human being. Afterwards, I realized if you really want to make a picture, you cannot just point and shoot. You may find it easy if you are taking a photo of your relatives, friends and family because you know them. You have connection with them. It is a lot easier. Even most of the photos in my gallery if you have seen, those people are my family and friends.
What about taking photos of other people? You don’t know them. You have no connection at all with them. That will be the biggest problem in taking portrait of people. You’ve got to have at least one theme in order to create one picture. Either your theme will be happy, sad, angry, or emo mood? You are the one who will decide. And for those who have good PR, it should be no trouble for them to break the ice between you and the person or group you are dealing with. Unless you intend to take candid pictures. I learn from various photographers who are experienced in potraiture and they all advice me to communicate with them while taking pictures. Not just “Okay, SMILE!” or “Say Cheese!”.
It’s the hardest part to dig up a person’s natural characteristic. We all tend to be a little bit “stereotype” when we happen to meet new people or be in a new environment. Hence, it is important to get them comfortable with you so that it will be a lot easier for both side during the photo session. By the way, if you are hungry for more portraits, you can log on to my website.
