A bit of everything

Salam Ramadhan

September 12th, 2007 Faris

First off, I would love to wish Happy Ramadhan to all muslimin and muslimat.

This is going to be my first time fasting far away from my beloved country. I really miss my home now. I love Ramadhan so much. I really do. It reminds me of my childhood. I still remember when I was a kid, I used to spend most of my time doing outdoor activities (only after I finished my homework or else my mom not gonna let me play) i.e playing football and other stuff as well. So, even though it was fasting month, we (my friends and I) didn’t really care much.

Got home 5 to 10 minutes before breaking time and dinner was served! The food was massive and definitely delicious and also there were like 2 or 3 type of drinks ready on the table. Really miss the moment. Gonna miss the terawih as well. Especially the moment where my friends and I always “ponteng” terawih to go to a restaurant nearby to have “kerang” and “colek” (kelantan slang, you might find it hard to pronounce it if you never heard of it). Afterwards, we will go straight to the shop to get “bunga api” and go back to the mosque a few minutes before terawih ends. I’m such a nice boy.

Mosque in Dubai

However, I reckon it is going to be my best experience celebrating Ramadhan on other places. Luckily, when I looked at the timetable, the breaking time isn’t that late. Close to Malaysia time I reckon. So, I’m not worried about that. My concern is terawih prayers. Perhaps I should start looking at any nearest mosque and see what time they start the prayers. There’s one mosque I know closest to my house which is in Barking. The mosque that I always go for friday prayers. 99.8% Pakistani.

You’re gonna find every single mosque in Malaysia is occupied by Malaysians but unlike here, different mosque conducted by different race I would say. Depends on which area you’re in basically. Like one mosque near the Regent Park, mostly they are conducted by Arabs. Even to confirm the date for Eidulfitri or Eidiladha, may vary depending on respective group of people in certain area.

I’ll be doing just fine here. Even tomorrow, I know my colleagues would offer me a cup of tea and biscuits as usual. ‘Coz I’m the only Malay in the company at the moment. So, nobody will know until I tell them I’m gonna be fasting for 30 days, and I can rest assure some of them will say “why are you doing this to yourself?”. I have nothing against them because I know some of them do not understand.

So, tonight I’m gonna wake up at 4 am in the morning or maybe earlier to have sahur. Imsak ends at 4.20 am.

I wish you all selamat menjalani ibadah puasa di bulan yang penuh keberkatan. Semoga puasa kita akan diberkatiNya.

Amin.

Love,

Faris
